Columbia Sportswear x Intuitive Machines

Work

Intuitive Machines partnered with Columbia to facilitate America's return to the moon, a first since the Apollo program. Intuitive Machines was responsible for designing and developing a lunar lander tasked with collecting data and samples to analyze the composition of the lunar surface. A key objective was to assess the presence of lunar gases, which could potentially be utilized for future space exploration, including Project Artemis.

Columbia contributed its advanced Omni-Heat technology, vital for protecting the lander's critical components. My involvement began when Columbia sought a two-person film crew to document the rocket launch. We secured permission for one team member to access the mission control facility, though not the control room itself.

The project presented significant challenges, from numerous nocturnal boat excursions into the open ocean to multiple launch postponements. We also engineered a custom, remotely operated pan/tilt rig (leveraging FreeFly Systems). Despite these complexities, we successfully completed the assignment. The mission marked a historic achievement—America's return to the moon—and our cinematic contributions gained international exposure through various press outlets. The culminating broadcast commercial featured a voiceover from JFK.

Thank you Columbia Sportswear for not only making rad gear - but believing in me once again to come through with one of the utmost clunch projects ever thrown my way.
